The Food Project
The mission of The Food Project is to grow a productive and thoughtful community
network in which youth and adults from diverse backgrounds work together
to build a sustainable food system. TFP produces healthy food for residents
of the city and surrounding areas who provide youth leadership opportunities.
In addition, and perhaps most importantly, TFP strives to inspire and support
others to create change in their own communities.
Since 1991, TFP has built a national model of engaging young people in personal
and social change through sustainable agriculture. Year after year, TFP works
closely with over a hundred teenagers and thousands of volunteers to farm
31 acres in rural Lincoln, MA and on several lots in urban Boston. Through
this annual work, TFP is identifying and transforming a new generation of
leaders by placing young men and women in unusually responsible roles with
meaningful and important work.
Each season, TFP grows nearly a quarter-million pounds of food without chemical
pesticides, donating half to local shelters. In addition, TFP sells the remainder
of the produce through Community Supported Agriculture crop shares and farmers’ markets.
Nearly half of TFP’s work is done in the capacity of a resource center
for organizations and individuals worldwide, for organizations and educators
to learn from TFP’s expertise through materials, youth training programs
and professional development opportunities.
