Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
BBBS is the oldest and largest young mentoring organization in America,
founded in 1904. In 2004, the organization served more than 225,000 youth
ages 5 through 18, in 5,000 communities across America, with a network of
agencies 470 strong.
As shown by research and anecdotal evidence, BBBS one-to-one mentoring of
young people helps at-risk youth overcome the many challenges they face.
They are less likely to use illegal drugs, consume alcohol, skip school and
classes, or engage in violent acts. The mentoring program fosters confidence
in school performance, friendships and family life, and great self-esteem.
BBBS serves more than 225,000 American children across all 50 states through
its two core programs:
Big Brothers Big Sisters – Community based
Volunteers provide Little Brothers and Sisters with one-on-one time
and attention in their communities, usually from two to four times
a month. These unstructured outings are a way to cultivate relationships
that provide the children with skills to manage day-to-day challenges.
Through simple friendship, volunteers experience the joy of helping kids
discover a world of opportunities.
Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schools
BBBS volunteers provide Little Brothers
and Sisters with one-on-one time and attention in school, usually
once a week during the academic year. Teachers identify those children who
can most benefit from interacting with a caring adult.
BBBS was selected in 2003 by Forbes Magazine as one of its top ten charities,
receiving the magazine’s “gold star” status on the list
of charities it believes are worthy of donor consideration.
