Anxiety Disorders Association of America
The ADAA is a nonprofit organization with the mission of promoting the prevention,
treatment and cure of anxiety disorders and improving the lives of everyone
suffering from them.
Since 1980, the ADAA has enabled hundreds of thousands of individuals to
benefit from its services and publications, by disseminating information,
advocating for cost effective treatments, and linking people who need treatment
with those able to provide it. The association is comprised of professionals
who conduct research and treat anxiety disorders and individuals who have
a personal or general interest in learning more about these disorders.
The vision of the ADAA is a great undertaking, but also an important one.
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness afflicting Americans,
with 40 million (18.1%) of the adult population over age 18 affected. According
to a study commissioned by the ADAA and published in the Journal of Clinical
Psychiatry, the economic impact of anxiety disorders in the US is more than
$42 billion a year, almost one third of the $148 billion total mental health
costs for the US.
The ADAA is the only national, nonprofit organization dedicated solely to
informing the public, legislators and healthcare professionals that anxiety
disorders are real, serious, and treatable. The organization promotes the
early diagnosis, treatment and cure of these disorders, and is committed
to improving the lives of those suffering from them.
To achieve its goals, the ADAA reaches out to clinicians, healthcare professionals,
researchers, policy makers, educators, and individuals with anxiety disorders
and their families, and collaborates with other healthcare organizations
across the globe.
