ADD/ADHD in the Workplace
It is well-known that ADD/ADHD in children can affect their ability to function
properly at school. What is less well-known is the struggle that ADD/ADHD
in adults can cause in the workplace. Since ADD/ADHD often affects the ability
to concentrate and remain on task, it is often difficult for adults with
ADD/ADHD to be productive. The following list provides tips for adults with
ADD/ADHD on how to be successful in the workplace.
- Let your supervisor know about your situation. By simply addressing the
issue of adult ADD/ADHD, many misunderstandings can be avoided.
- Use
a day planner to keep track of important information and deadlines.
If you work at a computer, you can use it to set reminders.
- If you
have hyperactivity, use your lunch hour as a time to release energy
by walking briskly around your office building. Make sure you take
frequent stretch breaks at work to minimize tapping fingers and other nervous
activity.
- If your working situation poses many interruptions, keep
a post-it note pad on your desk and immediately write down your
current task so that you don’t forget what you were doing.
- If you
find it difficult to concentrate in meetings, bring a notebook
and take detailed notes on what is being said.
- Have a meeting with
your supervisor on Monday mornings to set out a list of tasks for
the week. Keep this list handy to maintain focus and cross off completed
tasks.
